Abstract

Colchicine, a natural alkaloid derived from plants of the lilac family, is a substance of ancient use, with more than 2,000 years of history in medicine. Recognized for its anti-inflammatory properties, it acts through multiple mechanisms, which gives it’s significant therapeutic value. Currently, it has experienced a renewed clinical interest, being used in various medical specialties, including dermatology. This article presents a concise overview of the history of colchicine, its main characteristics, action mechanisms, adverse effects and current applications, with special emphasis on its usefulness in the treatment of skin diseases.
