Phytophotodermatitis and/or Berloque Dermatitis: A Brief Review of the Topic in Light of Several Observed Cases

Abstract

Phytophotodermatitis is a branch of dermatology encompassing phototoxic inflammatory reactions to certain chemicals found in some plants or fruits. These reactions are triggered by exposure to sunlight, causing inflammation and pigmentary sequelae. Many believe that Berloque dermatitis and phytophotodermatitis are the same condition, given their shared clinical and pathogenic similarities. However, others maintain that phytophotodermatitis is caused by plants or fruits, while Berloque dermatitis is caused by colognes or perfumes (especially those containing bergamot oil). We reviewed this topic in light of several cases observed at our center. We also provide a brief overview of current knowledge on the subject.
